Anyone who has studied Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic, will recognize that a completely literal, word-for-word translation would often make no sense in English.

However, the NASB comes about as close as a translation can while still being understandable. Its translators were all committed to the inerrancy of the original manuscripts as well. In general, the translators were careful to follow the lead of the KJV and thus retained it overall style and flow of thought. Unfortunately, it is now out of print, and I have been unable to find it available anywhere.

You should make it a habit to compare several versions. Where you find significant differences between versions, you should consult conservative commentaries for further information on the passage. Find Dr. Phil online at either apbrown2. Continued from previous column.

The original manuscripts were God-breathed and thus were free from error, but we don't have the originals, and many of us can't read Greek. Thus, we have a choice of which translation to read.

No Bible version is perfect. The King James Version is an excellent translation that has stood the test of time, but there is value in comparing translations to get a better understanding of a verse. These pages are intended to help individuals who want to know more about these translations and which one is most suitable for them.

I have not included the NIV in this study because I do not agree with its basic translation philosophy, which includes dynamic equivalence. The topic of which manuscripts are the most accurate is complex and controversial. Reportedly, the variations in manuscripts are relatively small and do not affect the foundational doctrines of Scripture. I do not believe that the manuscripts used should necessarily have a great impact on which translation is chosen, although it may be helpful to know the major differences, some of which I have included here.

Quotations may be from the edition E-Sword or printing Bible Gateway - there is little variation between them. The purpose is not to cast doubt on the accuracy of the sacred Word, nor to promote a change from the use of the KJV.

Each of these versions is reliable and will not lead to wrong doctrine when the text is properly evaluated in context and in relation to the whole of the Scriptures.

If I have centered on faults, it is for the sake of the preservation of truth and the evaluation of weaknesses, not to degrade the translation. I would like to do that sometime, and may add it to this list of versions for comparison.There have been many articles which have evaluated modern Bible translations in light of theological concerns, in light of their handling of the Old and New Testaments, and in terms of their use of English style.

In this article, which is a modified version of a journal article I wrote on this subject a decade ago, I evaluate seven major translations in terms of how they handle passages of special interest to the Grace message. Before I discuss each, I think it is important to explain the difference between the Greek texts that five of these translations utilize versus the other two.

The issue is the Greek manuscripts that they choose to translate. The other five translations translate what is called the Critical Text CT.

In their view these three early manuscripts Aleph, A, and B were nearly perfect manuscripts and thus when they agree, that is the correct reading even if a thousand or more manuscripts contradict that reading. Claiming has a pejorative tone. The reason is obvious. This passage serves to illustrate how translators sometimes find it difficult to set aside their theological convictions when translating.

If the goal were simply to convey what the original language says as clearly as possible in English, then they would not resort to this sort of interpretive rendering of the text. The key question here is how the various translations handle the Greek words tis adelphos onomazomenos.

I have italicized the portion of the translations below that handle those words. In this passage Paul is telling the believers in the church of Corinth that they are to judge those who are inside, not those outside, the church vv 10, If one believes those inside the church are believers, then Paul is telling the believers in Corinth to separate from immoral or covetous or idolatrous believers in the church.

If, however, one believes that those inside the church includes both believers and unbelievers [or false professors], then Paul is telling the believers in Corinth to separate from immoral or covetous or idolatrous unbelievers in the church.

If the job of the translator is to translate and not interpret, the translator should seek to make his translation of this passage as vague as the original. There is also nothing in the text about what the person calls himself. The Greek verb to call is not found in this verse.Translation Comparison Charts.

I see no legitimate connection between the concept communicated by the Hebrew text and the text of The Message. Romans Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.

Whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed.

This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past.

God sacrificed Jesus on the altar of the world to clear that world of sin. Having faith in him sets us in the clear. God decided on this course of action in full view of the public--to set the world in the clear with himself through the sacrifice of Jesus, finally taking care of the sins he had so patiently endured. Comments: KJV is the most literal here.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? Can anything ever separate us from Christ's love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?This is just a sample of the many verses in the NASB that change the Word of God dealing with the virgin birth of Christ, the deity of Christ, the infallibility of the Bible, salvation by faith, the Trinity, and many other areas of importance to the Christian Faith.

While the NASB doesn't altogether do away with the subject of the deity of Christ, it attempts to downgrade it.


Many verses are completely eliminated. Verses have been changed in every book. This is just a small sample of those verses.

The NASB along with numerous other modern translations, is a product of Catholicism, endeavoring to corrupt the Bible of fundamental Bible believing Protestants, and to insert their own corrupt doctrines.

It isn't the gospel of God, but of the kingdom of God. NASB Acts "When he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out before the people". Strong's G - pascha. Can only be translated as Passover. There is no way this can be translated as "Easter". But that excuse completely ignores the actual word of the original scripture.

It means Passover and there is no way around it. People who claim that it can be translated as "Easter" don't know what they are talking about. They are only going by what they have been taught.

Any website that says that it can be translated as Easter is only going by false tradition and not by accuracy of translation. The Greek word simply cannot be translated as "Easter". NASB has this correct! Almost every possible translation says Passover. Strong's G - sabbatismos. Messages: 5, Likes Received: However, the great downside to the NASB is that since it seeks to be so [almost] absolute in its translation of the Hebrew and Greek, it makes for a difficult read due to the adherence to foreign word order for us. I am an English major, so reading and understanding it is a nonissue for me, but I stumble over the words when read aloud. Additionally, I feel like I'm translating the translation sometimes when I am trying to explain it to others, which was the same thing I had to do with the KJV.

You'll find many here who advocate the Byzantine tradition - be it the old Textus Receptus or the Majority Text. My personal drawbacks for both of these versions are the same - neither does particularly well in a public setting.
